The NYFS Washington DC Program Institute, sponsored by the Society, offers training in the theory and practice of psychoanalysis under the guidelines offered by the International Psychoanalytic Association. The New York Freudian Society is a component society of the IPA.
The Institute's course of study includes a thorough grounding not only in Freud's revolutionary discoveries about the human mind, but also in the creative and contemporary ideas of those psychoanalysts who followed him. Thus, candidates encounter a wide range of theoretical perspectives that address clinical issues in current practice. Psychoanalytic training is organized around clinical process. We offer candidates the opportunity to develop and deepen analytic listening skills early in training, and the teaching of key analytic concepts is embedded in the experience of working with clinical process. In classes, candidates learn to approach the different levels of meaning revealed in case material.
Those interested in the serious study and practice of psychoanalysis are welcome to contact members of the Society and Institute to discuss questions and interests. Applications for candidacy in the Institute can be directed to Dr. Kerry Malawista at 301-983-4541. Applicants with previous psychoanalytic training at other IPA institutes may also make inquiry to the Admissions Committee with regard to the possibility of obtaining advanced status. The Committee will consider each such case in the light of the applicant's prior experience and the comparability of the previous training, and the Institute's standards. |
